Andrew Hairston

“I see the Justice of the Peace as an empathetic protector of our neighbors and family when they’re in need.

I want to keep our children in schools and keep our families in their homes.”

My vision of the way in which a Justice of the Peace functions in harmony with their community is simple:

  1. People are the priority, and relationship building is the fundamental unit of community.

  2. Homes are sites of intergenerational joy, and I will strive to keep families in their homes.

  3. Children belong in safe and supportive learning environments, and nothing should disrupt that.

My name is Andrew Hairston,

I am a Black southerner and civil rights lawyer. I am running to be your Justice of the Peace because I believe deeply in social and racial justice. After a pandemic and historic Black Lives Matter protests, we know we need to change Travis County to work for all of us.

I will empower families to thrive in their homes and keep children in their classrooms.

Andrew Hairston is a civil rights attorney and writer based in Austin, TX. He has deep experience in field organizing, non-profit management, and community engagement. He is passionate about fighting for the civil rights of folks who have traditionally been passed over, especially Black people. He holds degrees from Howard University and Louisiana State University.

Born in North Carolina — and raised across the South and the Midwest — he would most pointedly describe himself as a doting uncle with an unmistakable laugh. He is licensed to practice law in Texas and Louisiana.
